I'm a Mess
So, I'll be the first one to admit it... I'm not one of those 'organized' people. For the most part, I have a lot of my life organized, but as far as sewing goes, nopenopenope. Observe...
But that's ok; there is a method to the madness. I don't know what that method is, but I'm able to 'Tim Gunn it.' I don't have enough space to have everything laid neatly out. I took an old dresser and refinished it for my fabrics
and I found an old sewing kit box thingy at goodwill and that holds a lot of my basic supplies. The left top drawer in my dresser holds notions and the top right drawer holds all paper products (besides the stack of random magazines on my work space), such as patterns and my sewing machine manual.
The top of my work space is usually cluttered. It's full of half finished pieces or ideas of things I want to try. And I know where everything is, so it's organized in a way. I clean it occasionally when Mrs. Peaches gets a wild hair and decides to jump up there. I don't ever leave anything out that she could hurt herself on. Its almost always fabric and pattern pieces. But I don't have a whole lot of room to work with. Plus, I have this giant jewelry box that takes up a sizable chunk of tabletop real estate.
I do 99% of my cutting on the floor. I got this handy dandy cardboard cutting board that folds up nicely and is stored inside it's own zippered bag. I usually unfold that (partially, as we don't have a whole lot of floor space, either.) and do my pinning and cutting on that. That's only if Mrs. Peaches is willing to let me... She has ears like a damn hawk and comes a runnin' anytime I am getting fabric ready to cut. I don't care if she's dead asleep somewhere and I am ninja quiet; She's on the way! And she must step on each and every fabric to determine whether or not she will be claiming it as her own.
I have a little bit of leftover green stretchy knit that she currently uses as a makeshift bed in there. And while all of this is adorable, it is also slightly frustrating. I don't want her to come in and get all comfy, only to have me move her 3 minutes later. So, I usually have to shut her out until I have finished cutting out my pieces.
The fabric itself is mostly stored in my refinished dresser. I used to have it in some sort of order, with the delicate fabrics all together and the thicker fabrics near each other. But after buying more discounted fabrics, it turned into "There's room in this drawer!! Stuff it in there!" And that's ok. It was all sitting on the top of the dresser. At least its out of sight now. :)
