FAQ
I sat down with the author of this blog (myself) for a little Q&A
1. What made you want to start sewing?
-I don’t really know. I’m think my mom got me into hand sewing when I was little and I just never stopped.
2. What made you want to start a blog?
-I’m not really sure. I guess when I started to use my mom’s sewing machine and I was kind of lost. Then when I started sewing actual patterns, I was even more lost. I used good ole Google a lot and called my mom for help. I read a lot of blogs and most of them were helpful, but none of them really gave me all the answers I was looking for. I thought if I made a blog with the beginner questions being answered, hopefully it would help another beginner out.
3. What kind of sewing machine do you use?
-I have a Brother SE 400 and I love the hell out of it. It sews, it dances, it embroiders. I still haven't used most of the many features that it comes with, but I love it a lot.
4. Where do you buy your sewing supplies?
-I buy 99% of my supplies from Hancock Fabrics. There is one 10 minutes from the house, so that is where most of it comes from. I also shop their online store a lot. I’m not a giant fan of going out in public sometimes. I do a little Joanns and Hobby Lobby, as well. My machine came from Amazon.
5. What is your favorite type of fabric?
-Anything stretchy! I’m a giant fan of knits. There are some lovely fabrics out there that have zero stretch to them, and I will use them more once I get more comfortable with my dressmaking. But for now, if I make a slight mistake on the fit, the stretchy fabrics work with me.
6. What is your favorite fashion era?
-I’d have to say maybe the 50s, but I like a little from almost every era. I love a good full skirt and a fitted bodice, but I also like flowy hippie stuff. I love jeans and a t-shirt, but I also love heels. I just mainly like stuff that makes me feel good when I wear it.
Do I feel like a princess? Check.
Do I feel like a movie star? Check.
Do I feel like a badass woman? Checkity check!
7. How often do you actually sit down to sew?
-I almost always sew on the weekends, and the week nights depend on a few things. The husband and I don’t watch a whole lot of tv, but we have a few comedies that we tune in for. Because after a hard day at work, I want to laugh. So if said shows are new, I try to catch them. However, if I am really focused on a project, I will skip shows. It also depends on how my day went. If it was a particularly crappy day, I want to sit and talk with the husband until I feel better. I try not to sew if I am in a bad mood, just like driving or baking. Sometimes you have to, but I try to avoid it if at all possible.
8. Where do you sew?
- I sew in our spare bedroom, Spider Town. My husband had the room all to his self, which was fine with me. I had no use for it when we moved in back in 2008. He kept various car parts, comic books, model cars and old car magazines in there. When I started to get into sewing, it was on our bedroom floor, which is not very big. He moved a desk and a dresser into the spare room and squished all of his stuff to one side, so I now sew in our spare room. There still isn't a lot of room, and I still have to cut everything on the floor, but I have a desk for my machine and a dresser for my fabrics.
9. What do you do for a living?
- I work for a powder coating company. I actually process all the online orders while also moderating our online chat and answering phones. There are about 30 billion other little things I do during the day. I do not like sitting in front of a computer all day, but what can you do? My dream is to one day own a farm. I really think that if I can work hard outside all day and provide for my family that I will truly be happy. I want to go to bed at night and think ‘yeah, I actually did something meaningful today.’ Plus, who wouldn’t want cows?! They’re adorable!
10. What kind of dress form do you use?
- I got a Singer dress form off of Overstock.com for around $90. It has the standard adjustable dials and its pretty darn close to my size. The only thing I dislike about her is that sometimes its hard to get clothing on and off her. She's kind of covered in this strange fuzz. I have read about dummy covers, so I might end up getting/making one of those in the future.
11. What sewing blogs do you read?
- I have a couple of blogs that I read quite regularly:
• Gertie’s New Blog for Better Sewing - One of the first fashion blogs I started reading and one of the best out there. Her style is right up my alley!
• Tilly and the Buttons - This is a cute blog. Tilly makes quite a few patterns herself!
• Make This Look – This isn’t a blog, per say, but it’s really more of an informative website that tells you which pattern to buy if you want to copy a certain dress, most of which are from ModCloth, which I love. Although it has been over a year since their last update, it’s still a good read.
- I also read a couple of non sewing blogs that are very good reads:
• The Small Things Blog - A wonderful site about hair, beauty, family and good times. My mom told me about this blog and I haven’t turned back since!
• Cake Crumbs – This lady lives in Australia and is very creative in her baking ways. I love reading this blog and seeing pictures of her whimsical work.
If you have any other questions, feel free to ask! :)
