Pink Flowery Bodysuit/ Simplicity 8513 Review
I am a HUGE fan of bodysuits. I love having something in one piece that works as both a blouse and also occasionally undies. Honestly tho, I usually wear undies under a bodysuit so I can wear it over and over without having to wash it as often. I have made one bodysuit before, but it was pretty short in the torso area, or maybe my fabric wasn't stretchy enough in all directions. I dunno, it was not comfy but it looked good! The lace back was so lovely. That was a time when I didn't really make muslins for anything. I'm still bad about that, but I do consciously think about it when I open a new pattern now, so that is an improvement.
Anywho, the other day my husband and I were talking about bra patterns because I participated in BRAugust2018 on Instagram, so all month long I was thinking about pretty much nothing but bras. That is, until the question of the day was 'separates or one piece'. For lingerie in general, I prefer bodysuits and end up wearing separates, but in swimwear I usually prefer separates and end up wearing a one piece. The BRAugust2018 'challenge' was not only about bras, but lingerie and swimwear as well. That led me to looking at not only bra patterns that I have been wanting for a while, but also bodysuit patterns. I really liked the Simplicity 8228 and 8229 from Madalynne that I already owned, so I went looking for her other patterns. She had released 4 new bra/undie patterns and one bodysuit since I bought those two! And since I am broke/cheap, I went to ebay to see if anyone had them for a decent price. I FOUND ALL 4 BRAND NEW FOR $5 A PIECE WITH FREE SHIPPING OMG. lol. That is close to the 'retail cost' of one of them. I had added her bodysuit pattern to my shopping cart because I loved that it was a henley closure at the neck which I thought was super cute. However, Ebay shows you similar things that 'people who like this also like', and one of the pictures was of another bodysuit; Simplicity 8513.
Thanks to the new boy for getting his big feet in the shot. <3 The husband actually saw this one and pointed it out to me and I fell in love with the bell sleeves!! I also really liked the cross front one. This one was around $7, so I thought that this had a lot of style options and I went with this one instead of the Simplicity 8435 henley one. I still really like that one, so I will probably get it eventually. Its around $6.50 with free shipping, which is still not bad. I find I go to Ebay a lot for patterns lately because I am 36.22 miles away from the closest Joanns, so even when they do run a pattern sale, its in store only. Boooooooo. lol. Not that I need any more patterns, but still. I am very excited to get the 4 bra patterns, because I am not super crazy about all of the bras, but the undies that come in some of those packs are super cute!! So either way, its a win/win. Back to the bodysuit. I received this a couple of days ago and opened it right up because I wanted to read the instructions and see what I was going to be dealing with. It seemed super easy, so on my next day off (yesterday) I cut the pattern out and found a stretchy knit that I thought would look cute in bodysuit form.
I chose option B because of those gorgeous bell sleeves and it consisted of a whopping 5 pieces; the front, back, sleeve, neck band and the elastic guide for the leg openings. Construction was ridiculously easy. The back is in 2 pieces, so that was sewn together first. Sew front to back at side seams and shoulder seams. Add elastic to leg area. Sew on snaps. Attach sleeves. Attach neckband. Boom! If I had started working on this earlier in the day, it would have taken 1 day to make. I worked outside in the yard for a couple of hours in the morning, tho. Anywho, I used my serger to attach the elastic to the leg openings and that was my first time doing so, and I loved it! I just moved the blade so it wouldn't be cutting the fabric and it was sewn on like buttah. I actually used my serger for the entire thing except for when I sewed on the sleeves and when I hemmed the sleeves. That made construction even easier. So, here she is!
This is the best neck band I have ever done. It looks so good!
The back seam.
Inside the leg opening. Adding the elastic with the serger was so much fun and it didn't turn out perfectly, but I will definitely try again! Still very happy with it!
The Crotch lining. I hate that word, but it looks pretty good!
Before I cut the fabric out, I held the paper pattern up to my torso and kind of thought it looked a little short, so I measured my front and thought the pattern could use a couple of inches in length. I didn't want a re-do of that first one being too short. So, I cut the pattern at the 'lengthen or shorten here' line and added 2 inches of paper to the length. If my fabric was a bit more stretchy in that direction, I might have skipped this step. Maybe not. Nothing wrong with some extra length room. Makes for a more comfy fit when you move so you don't go all camel toe. But I am so glad I added some length because its just about perfect. Wearable muslin!!!
Also, those bell sleeves are freakin magic. They're super big and I don't know why I love them so much but I do. I don't care if they're in style or not. Get off my back... I wear what I want. haha.
This thing fits like a glove in the hip area, but in the bust its a little big. I cut it for a Large because of the hip measurement, but the bust area was a Medium. Since this was my first go-around with this pattern, I went Large the whole way, but next time I will probably blend the side seams into a medium around the bust area so it fits a little closer. Not that this one is bad at all! Its comfy so its just fine as is. Plus since its a little looser on the top, it won't look so much like a bodysuit but maybe more like a tucked in blouse. That is mainly why I wanted to delve more into bodysuits. They make me feel so put together when all I have to do it throw one on and add some jeans or a skirt. I love the look of a tucked in shirt, but mine never stay tucked in long and I get frustrated easily, so yeah. haha. But seriously this thing was an amazing make and I am beyond thrilled how awesome it turned out!
Will. Make. Again. :)

I was cleared by my doctor to start using this simaslim postpartum corset
ReplyDeleteafter I was released from giving birth since it was a natural birth with no tears. I started using it 3 days PP throughout the whole day (I would take it off here & there for a few minutes) I used it the whole month after and I’m not sure if it was this or my diet or both combined but my uterus started contracting pretty quickly and I notice it shrink down fast! I love using it even now that I’m 6 wks PP bc I feel like postportum girdle helps w my posture & limit my appetite since it’s pretty constricting. The only con is that I don’t recommend wearing this when you go out as it’s pretty bulky and you can definitely tell you have something under your clothes
